About Bury Cannons

The Bury Cannons Chess Club was formed in 1998 when two of the then four chess clubs in Bury St Edmunds decided to merge. The Woolpack Wanderers and the Bury Knights were the two clubs involved and the main purpose of their coming together was to form a single strong club that would be able to challenge the might of Ipswich Chess Club, Suffolk's largest and strongest club.

Membership currently stands at 39. Juniors are encouraged as soon as they are mature enough to mingle with the adults.

In the coming season 2008/09 the Club will have seven teams in the Bury Area Chess League (two in Division 1, two in Division 2 and three in Division 3), three teams in the Suffolk League (one each in Divisions 1, 2 and 3) and one in the Suffolk League Cup competition. In addition, teams will be entered in the Suffolk u100 and u125 competitions, the Roger Goldsmith Competition and the Norfolk and Suffolk Cup. It is anticipated that a total of 20 teams will be competing this season.

It is a friendly club where visitors and potential members are warmly welcomed. Club nights are every Thursday from 7.30 until 10.30 pm. The venue is the Moreton Hall Community Centre in Symonds Road.  Click here for a map.
